I have decided to devote some time here to share my experiences in coaching at the mastery level. It is time to scale up coaching to what it can truly be so that coaches, leaders and managers can know what is in store for them when they pursue coaching seriously.
Series 1: “The Master Coach: The Maestro in Coaching
It has been about 15 years now since I wrote on Coaching when it was totally a new discipline that many had not heard about. I started writing on the basics of coaching as the intention was to get as many people to be on board to use and experience what this powerful tool in high performance can do. Looking back it was a good decision that I had taken as the scenario now is so different from what it was then.
I wanted to set the example for the rest to follow by investing time, effort and money to become the region’s first Professional Certified Coach. In the same breath, I wanted to set the highest coaching benchmark by getting this credential from the International Coach Federation (ICF), the world’s standard bearer of Coaching.
Making this investment as well as having the strong conviction that Coaching is the way to go, was indeed the best decision I had done in my entire life. Look at what Coaching is today; from a ‘desert land’ that I walked on 15 years ago to an ‘oasis’ is really ecstatic and breathtaking. Also from a road less travelled to a highway that is seeing more and more people getting on it. It is fully recognised now that the final tipping point in high performance lies in Coaching. Both corporations and the private homes are embarking onto this as the way to create success and fulfillment for everyone.
The ‘supply’ side of coaching is also doing very well too. There are more certified coaches now and more and more organisations are investing in it to grow their leaders to develop their people. Let’s scan the coaching landscape today. There must be at least 10,000 trained coaches, 600 Certified Professional Coaches, 100 ICF Associate Certified Coaches and a dozen ICF Professional Certified Coaches and a lot more from non ICF bodies.
There are also more and more coaching schools today apart from Corporate Coach Academy that are offering learning opportunities to serious minded professionals who want to be certified coaches. And finally, ICF has firmly being rooted as THE Coaching Brand that all forward looking coaches should associate themselves with.
Thus, the time is now right to take coaches and Coaching to the next level of its growth. My new Coaching mission is to uplift the coaching skills of these coaches so that they can successfully make the transition from ordinary to mastery coaches so that they become extraordinary ones who can do much more for people, not only in overcoming their issues, achieve goals but attain life fulfillment with sustainability, at the same time .
So who is a Master Coach?
The best way to explain this is to analyse the different methodology deployed by the 3 levels of coaches in their work with their coachees. At the Associate level of Coaching, the coach leads the coachee to the solution where they feel are the best for them; at the Professional level of Coaching, the coach works alongside the coachee to find the best solution together; and at the Mastery level, the coachee takes the lead in the entire change journey, with the coach receding in the background.
Master coaches are in a class of their own. They dance more and work less with their coachees. They have the finesse and the natural flair to tune up for the dance that evokes their greatest inspiration to become so self empowered and self generative that naturally propel them to make their own discovery single-handedly.
Master coaches are able to make their coachees self-generative because they can create the most ideal safe environment that is anchored on the highest trust, respect and compassion that bring out their best in the least threatening way.
If coaches are known to ask questions, then Master Coaches ask lesser, even shorter and powerful ones too that can take the coachees deep down into the key places of their being that they have not been there before. If coaches are known to believe that their coachees can find their answers to their issues, then Master Coaches help them to appreciatively look at what is already working for them to find even better answers. And if coaches are known to help them achieve their goals, then Master Coaches help them to extend their learning and discovery far beyond to benefit other areas of their lives, which can be holistic and wholesome in living their lives to the fullest.
Indeed, the Master Coach is a maestro of coaching, the highest caliber of coaches in the world of Coaching. It is in my scheme of things to offer this avenue for forward looking coaches and people leaders who want to scale up to the best they can ever be that will unleash their fullest coaching potentials.
